- About the role
-
What will I be doing?
- As our Chemist, you will play a key part in supporting high‑quality analytical science, working within a specialist laboratory environment dedicated to Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and carbon‑14 testing.
- This is a great opportunity for candidates at a graduate or early‑career stage, as well as experienced professionals looking for a meaningful role in scientific research, sustainability, and precision‑based analysis.
- You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operation and maintenance of a single‑stage AMS system, along with the linked Carbon Extraction and Graphitisation System (CEGS).
- Your work will contribute directly to accredited scientific outputs and the continuous improvement of laboratory performance.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Operating and maintaining AMS and CEGS systems, prioritising workloads to meet customer and project needs.
- Producing accredited analytical reports in line with ISO 17025 requirements and supporting the laboratory’s quality management system.
- Leading method development and validation for AMS techniques and contributing to UKAS assessments.
- Managing laboratory stock, ensuring safe operation, and troubleshooting technical issues to reduce downtime.
- Balancing hands‑on instrument work with office‑based analysis, reporting, and quality‑control activities.
What are the Requirements?
We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, including individuals who are underrepresented in science and technical fields. You do not need to meet every requirement to apply — if you’re excited about the role, we’d like to hear from you.
You will bring:
- Experience or knowledge of operating AMS systems and Carbon Extraction and Graphitisation Systems.
- A graduate‑level degree or minimum HNC in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Understanding of UKAS ISO 17025, analytical quality systems, and laboratory best practice.
- Experience developing and validating analytical methods in line with accreditation standards.
- Strong organisational, communication, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a small, collaborative team.
- A commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement is essential, along with a proactive approach to supporting laboratory developments and technical enhancements.
