Summary of vacancy

Are you a graduate with a degree in Environmental Science or similar subject? Would you like the opportunity to gain experience as an Environment Assistant?

You can help create a greener UK. A greener, more environmentally-friendly UK is possible, and we’re making it happen. As an Environment Assistant at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK you’ll be contributing to a recycling and resource management company that’s helping customers reduce their impact on the environment, conserve natural resources and reduce landfill.

This role is a 12 month fixed term contract that has the potential to be made a permanent role but not guaranteed at this stage.

What will I be doing?

Reporting to the Senior Environment Assistant, the Environment Assistant will be responsible for carrying out environmental monitoring in line with Permit requirements, identification and communication of non-compliance issues resulting from site visits and subsequent data processing, following all SUEZ policies, procedures and risk assessments.  The successful candidate will work closely with the SHEQ department and site managers.

The role will involve monitoring of landfill sites and other SUEZ facilities of gas, leachate, groundwater, surface water and other parameters, as required by the environmental permit for the sites.

A key responsibility will be checking results and using the Monitor Pro database along with reporting of routine environmental monitoring results to the Environment Agency via weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports as appropriate.

There are also a host of administrative tasks including, but not limited to assisting in creation and implementation of monitoring management plans, raising purchase orders, updating records and filing of analysis reports from the laboratory.

What are the requirements?

  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate initiative and be able to work alone. Working as part of a team the successful candidate must have good communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Applicants must be able to work flexible working hours as required by the business, including some travel to other regions to support monitoring and for meetings, as required. This will mean staying away from home, on occasion.
  • Applicants should ideally have an Environmental Science degree or similar and good report writing skills.
  • Applicants must have a full UK driving licence and be fully computer literate.
  • Experience of landfill sites is desirable but not essential as training will be given.
