As a Hydrogeologist at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, you’ll be contributing to an ever growing established company that’s helping customers reduce their impact on the environment, conserve natural resources and reduce landfill.

What will I be doing?

  • The post holder will work alongside the current Senior Hydrogeologist and will undertake all aspects of groundwater related interpretative and investigative work. This will involve producing conceptual site models for hydrogeological risk assessments, interpretation of risk results and environmental monitoring data to support technical reviews. 
  • There will be a need to discuss and negotiate with the regulator and to advise senior management. 
  • In addition the post holder will also be required to undertake similar assessments for perimeter ground gas working with the operations team gas engineers.
  • Numerical modelling is a key element and proficiency in stochastic and spreadsheet based models will be necessary.
  • Additionally, the Hydrogeology Team is responsible for managing the monitoring database and the post holder will be required to assist with problem resolution and development of the database.  The data is used by the Hydrogeology team to produce Annual Reports for each landfill site as well as technical reports.
  • From time to time there will also be a need to work on contaminated land projects, provide technical assessments as part of acquisition due diligence and work alongside similar technical experts from across the industry in developing best practice through the Environmental Services Association (ESA).

What are the requirements?

  • First degree (BSc or BEng) in Geology, Hydrogeology or Environmental Sciences is essential. A second higher degree (MSc or PhD) in hydrogeology, environmental science or similar related subject is desirable.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body is essential and the Candidate should be working towards a professional qualification (e.g. Chartered Geologist, CGeol).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a geo-environmental/ hydrogeology role or equivalent, with a focus on groundwater and ground gas.
  • The ability to analyse information and to present this logically in writing technical reports and clearly presenting data is essential for the role, as reports are required to be clear and accurate to ensure that various customers fully understand the content.
  • Experience should include a good foundation in Geology and Hydrogeology and experience in planning and undertaking ground investigations, geological/hydrogeological interpretation, risk assessment and environmental monitoring.
  • The Candidate must have the ability to progress projects from inception to closure, and to accurately reflect and meet client requirements (internal and external) in doing so.
  • Experience in the UK regulatory process is key as is ability to communicate with team members and colleagues at various levels from senior management to junior site tecnicians
  • Experience with modelling software is also required including but not limited to EA Remedial Targets Methodology, ConSim and LandSim. Experience with other numerical modelling packages is advantageous (e.g. MODFLOW / Groundwater Vistas) additionally, database management skills would be highly desireable.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team, as well as being willing to work individually is essential and to lead contractors and consultants teams in your area of expertise with the confidence of those working above and below you.
  • Enthusiastic, confident, self-motivated and dynamic with excellent verbal and written communication, together with the following key skills:
  • An understanding of ‘project management’ concepts as a large part of the role requires managing different teams of people from throughout the organisation at different periods, for example in preparing hydrogeological risk assessments, this would include co-ordinating information from multiple people/ sources (internal and external).
  • Managing these sources/ people requires good project management skills to ensure the correct information is provided within the statutory timescales.
